Melamine Incident: 2008 China Dairy Products Contamination Incident (also known as 2008 China Milk Powder Contamination Incident, 2008 China Poisoned Milk Products Incident, 2008 China Poisoned Milk Powder Incident) It was a food safety incident in China. The cause of the accident was that many babies who consumed milk powder produced by Sanlu Group were found to have kidney stones, and the chemical raw material melamine was subsequently found in the milk powder.

The incident aroused great attention from various countries and concerns about the safety of dairy products. After China’s General Administration of Quality Supervision, Inspection and Quarantine released a melamine inspection report on infant milk powder produced by domestic dairy manufacturers, the incident worsened rapidly, including Yili. April 6, 2011, " Announcement on the Limit Value of Melamine in Food: Melamine is neither a food raw material nor a food additive, and artificial addition to food is prohibited. Anyone who artificially adds melamine to food will be held legally responsible. As a chemical raw material, melamine can be used in the production of plastics, coatings, adhesives, and food packaging materials.

Data show that melamine may enter food from the environment, food packaging materials and other channels, and its content is very low. In order to ensure human health and food safety, in accordance with the "Food Safety Law" and its implementation regulations, based on summarizing the implementation status of the announcement on the temporary management limit value of melamine in milk and dairy products (Announcement No. 25 of 2008);

Considering that the Codex Alimentarius Commission has proposed limits for melamine in food, my country’s limits for melamine in food have been specifically formulated. The announcement is now as follows:

The limit value of melamine in infant formula is 1 mg/kg, and the limit value of melamine in other foods is 2.5 mg/kg. Foods above the above limits are not allowed to be sold.

The above regulations shall come into effect from the date of issuance. The announcement on the temporary management limit value of melamine in milk and dairy products (Announcement No. 25 of 2008) was abolished at the same time.

International standards

On July 2, 2012, the 35th session of the Codex Alimentarius Commission reviewed and approved the limit standards for melamine in liquid infant formula, specifically: Liquid infant formula The melamine limit is 0.15mg/kg.

On July 5, 2012, the United Nations Codex Alimentarius Commission, which is responsible for formulating food safety standards, set new standards for the melamine content in milk. From now on, the melamine content in each kilogram of liquid milk shall not exceed 0.15 mg. The Codex Alimentarius Commission said the new melamine content standards will help governments better protect consumer rights and health.
